King County Turns On Verdiem And Reduces Energy Consumption By Nearly 40 PercentKing County achieving goal of reducing greenhouse gases, preparing for climate change with help of PC Power Management Software; King County’s Clean Energy Plan Recognized as Model for NationSeattle, WA – Wednesday, May 27, 2009 – As part of King County’s nationally recognized initiatives to measurably reduce greenhouse gases and prepare for climate change, King County and Verdiem, Inc. today announced the results of the county’s deployment of Verdiem’s SURVEYOR PC Power Management Software. Since deployment in October 2007, Verdiem’s SURVEYOR has enabled King County’s agencies to reduce energy consumption by an average of 38 percent and eliminate more than 3 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions. The software also helped King County departments achieve PC energy costs reductions ranging up to 62 percent - equal to about 140-thousand dollars in savings. Initiated under the leadership of former County Executive Ron Sims, King County’s Climate Plan is considered to be among the most aggressive and responsive in the nation and a model for green economic best practices worldwide. Mr. Sims’ accomplishments in King County prompted President Barack Obama to name him as Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. “King County began its focus on global warming under Ron Sims and it continues to be a critical issue for our county as it continues its mission of meeting climate change challenges directly and effectively,” said Interim King County Executive Kurt Triplett. “With the tools provided by Seattle-based green-IT leader, Verdiem, King County has made important advancements towards reducing green house gas emissions, as well as significant and measurable energy cost reductions, which means more efficient use of taxpayer dollars.” “King County’s continued leadership in setting and implementing progressive energy conservation and environmental stewardship programs serves as a blueprint for local, state and federal government agencies around the world,” said Verdiem CEO Jeremy Jaech. “We’re thrilled that we have been able to use our SURVEYOR product to help King County achieve significant energy cost savings and at the same time present a solid case study for green-IT implementations for all organizations and businesses.” King County purchased Verdiem’s SURVEYOR for nearly 10,000 PCs in 18 departments, ranging from the Metropolitan King County Council to the Department of Transportation. While SURVEYOR can be managed by central IT, each of the 18 agencies in King County has the flexibility to set their own PC power management policies and the Department of Community and Human Services has been able to achieve energy cost saving of 62%. King County’s deployment of SURVEYOR has enabled the county to nearly reach their PC energy efficiency goals for 2009 – with SURVEYOR already achieving 38.6 percent of the County’s targeted 39.6 percent goal for PC energy reduction. Prior to the deployment of SURVEYOR, King County Departments relied on the standard power profile options found on many computer operating systems. While simple to configure, the standard power profiles didn’t provide the detailed measurement and management capabilities required to meet the 2006 executive mandate. Although IT Administrators for King County Departments were initially concerned about possible impacts to user productivity created by an automated power management solution on their networked system, they found SURVEYOR was easy to deploy and created no noticeable impact to employee productivity and satisfaction. “Networked PCs definitely consume the majority of our office energy requirements. By implementing simple policies – such as turning off our monitors after 15 minutes of inactivity, and suspend PCs after one hour -- we were able to generate a surprising amount of savings,” said King County’s Central Information Technology Enterprise Services Manager Bob Neddo. “In addition to the benefits of the visibility that the SURVEYOR reporting function provides on our overall carbon, energy, and dollar savings, the best part about SURVEYOR is its Wake on WAN functionality that allows our employees to wake their machines remotely when they are working from home. This countywide effort has yielded tremendous benefits that will ultimately help us better serve our residents.” For more information about King County’s green initiatives, and to learn how you can reduce your climate change impact, please visit: http://www.kingcounty.gov/exec/globalwarming/. ### About Verdiem ### Verdiem is an enterprise software company focused on PC Power Management & Green IT.
