Verdiem Launches EnergySmartPC Partner Program
November 15, 2004
With no end in sight to rising energy costs, Verdiem launches a program to expand adoption
and use of its innovative PC energy-saving software
Seattle, WAAs government and commercial organizations grapple with ever increasing energy
costs, Verdiem Corporation has launched a program to promote the widespread adoption of its
innovative PC energy-saving software. Verdiem’s software intelligently eliminates energy waste
in PCs and monitors by driving them into the lowest appropriate power state when they are not
in use. According to a study by the Bonneville Power Administration, Verdiem’s software can save
an average of 200 kilowatt-hours per PC annually, which is one third of the average PC’s annual
energy consumption.
PCs are voracious consumers of electricity, and their energy use is increasing
as faster processors, more memory, and more power-hungry peripherals become commonplace. According
to the U.S. Department of Energy and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratories (LBNL), the average
PC can waste up to 400 kilowatt-hours of electricity a year simply by running at full power when
no user is present. And while most PCs come equipped with power management capabilities, research
conducted by LBNL shows that up to 80% of PC users disable their power management settings.
SURVEYOR Network Energy Manager, Verdiem’s signature product, is a software program that allows
network administrators to synchronize PC power settings across thousands of PCs from one central
location. It adds new flexibility and control to existing PC power options, making these
functions more usable and dynamic. SURVEYOR can shut down PCs, control the power schemes that
determine energy use, or put PCs into low-power modes based on user needs and network
maintenance schedules. “SURVEYOR was developed because every year organizations in the U.S.
waste as much as $2 billion of electricity by leaving computers running when no one is using
them,” said Steven Sperry, Verdiem’s president and CEO.
Verdiem’s EnergySmartPC Partner Program was established to promote the widespread adoption and
use of SURVEYOR in both the public and private sectors, where large networks of computers account for
up to 10% of total energy consumption. Verdiem’s partners are energy services companies (ESCOs)
and other organizations that deliver energy efficiency solutions to commercial, educational and government
customers. SURVEYOR complements traditional energy-efficient lighting and HVAC systems
with a software product that provides immediate, painless energy savings and a rapid return on investment
of one year or less. Equally important, SURVEYOR’s built-in measurement and verification
functionality, combined with Verdiem’s performance guarantee, assures partners and customers alike
that SURVEYOR will deliver the promised energy savings.
In its quest to reduce PC energy waste, Verdiem has joined forces with a growing number of partners
in the U.S., including Good Company Associates of Texas; TSE Services, which is owned by the North
Carolina electrical cooperatives; ConsumerPowerline and Energy Conservation and Supply, both of
New York; Prime Energy of New Jersey; and Energy Options & Solutions of Michigan. “We are always
seeking innovative technologies that can reduce our customers’ energy costs,” said Rick Schroeder,
Accounts Manager for TSE Services. According to Glenn Garland, Energy Programs Director for Good
Company Associates, “We are excited about Verdiem’s software because it provides an effective solution
to the problem of rapidly growing energy consumption by computer networks, and it combines a
fast payback with an easy, quick implementation, which is good for customers and good for the environment.”
In addition to saving money, Verdiem’s SURVEYOR software helps organizations improve the environment.
Over 700 pounds of carbon dioxide – a leading component of greenhouse gas – are produced in
generating the electricity that powers a typical PC for a year. As a result of the energy savings on SURVEYOR-
enabled PCs, an organization with 10,000 PCs can reduce CO2 emissions by 1,420 metric tons
every year – equivalent to removing 230 SUVs from the highways.
