MADISON METROPOLITAN SCHOOL DISTRICT EXTENDS ENERGY EFFICIENCY LEADERSHIP ROLE WITH POWER MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE FOR PC NETWORKS
MADISON, Wis., OCTOBER 30, 2006 - The Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) announced today the implementation of energy efficiency power management software on PCs, throughout the district as part of a concerted effort to cut energy consumption and reduce operational costs. The industry-leading power management software will be installed by Seattle-based Verdiem and will be partially funded with the help of a financial incentive from Focus on Energy, Wisconsin's energy efficiency and renewable energy program. The implementation of power management software helped earn the MMSD the Governor's Award for Excellence in Energy Efficiency.
The PC network controls software provided by Verdiem was installed to address unnecessary energy consumption in the operation of the MMSD's computers. PCs and monitors with network controls enter a low-power sleep mode during periods of inactivity, which can result in an annual energy cost savings of $10 to $30 per PC and monitor set-up. PCs and Monitors can be reactivated in a matter of seconds by touching the keyboard or mouse, making PC network controls an easy and convenient way to cut energy consumption. MMSD estimates its use of Verdiem's SURVEYOR will result in a reduction of more than 1.7 million kilowatt hours a year and an annual energy cost savings of more than $175,000.
"Verdiem has helped us become more energy efficient in how we use technology," noted Doug Pearson, director of building services for the Madison Metropolitan School District. "The less we spend on powering PCs that are not use, the more resources we'll be able to devote to the children."
Several school districts throughout the country are already reaping the benefits of deploying Verdiem SURVEYOR, including Prince George County School District and Seattle School District. As a result of their SURVEYOR implementations, these organizations are expected to cut energy consumption on average by approximately 200 kWh per PC, resulting in thousands of dollars of savings, which frees budget for more directly meeting the needs of the state's students.
"Having the opportunity to work with Madison Metropolitan School District further cements our position across the country as a solution that marries technology and energy efficiency," said Kevin Klustner, chief executive officer, Verdiem,"Increasingly, public sector organizations are looking for ways to cut costs and improve their communities. SURVEYOR helps them accomplish both goals quickly and easily."
