Compugen Partners with Verdiem to Bring PC Power Management to Canadian Enterprises

IT Infrastructure Solution Provider Helps Customers Extend Green IT Initiatives Beyond the Datacentre to Include the Networked PC Environment

Toronto, Ont. - April 9, 2008 - Compugen Inc., one of the largest Canadian-owned IT solution and service providers and PC systems integrators, is pleased to announce that it has become a Platinum Partner in Canada for Seattle-based Verdiem, a leader in PC network energy management software. The partnership enables Compugen to help enterprise customers extend their power reduction and other green computing and cost-saving initiatives beyond the datacentre, to include the complete distributed desktop environment.

Verdiem’s SURVEYOR enterprise-level PC power management software measures, manages and reduces energy consumption on PC networks by providing remote, network-level control over PC power settings so that idle PCs and monitors can be put into lower power settings. This maximizes energy reduction, saving organizations $20 to $60 per PC per year in electricity costs, without interfering with end-user productivity or desktop maintenance. SURVEYOR, which consists of a server component and a desktop client compatible with Windows 95 through to Windows Vista, leverages the complete existing Windows power management interface. SURVEYOR includes advanced features such as Wake-on-WAN, which integrates with Microsoft SMS (Systems Management Server) to allow PCs in sleep mode to be woken on-demand for maintenance purposes such as software upgrades and patches.

(See related Compugen newsletter article “Actively Manage PC Power Consumption for Big Savings and Environmental Sustainability.”)

“Compugen is an ideal partner for Verdiem,” says Kevin Petersen, Director of Technology Alliances at Verdiem. “They have a strong VMware practice and are already using virtualization techniques to help enterprise customers save money by reducing power consumption and air conditioning requirements in the datacentre. By including our software as part of their extensive desktop deployment practice, Compugen can now further reduce total cost of ownership (TCO) at the desktop through reduced power consumption, and help customers take tangible steps to align IT activities with corporate environmental goals.”

Under the terms of the agreement, Compugen will provide consulting, sales, implementation and first-level support for Verdiem power management software to enterprise customers in Canada. Verdiem marketing initiatives in Canada will focus on supporting Compugen’s role as Verdiem’s primary reseller partner across the country.

“We are pleased about this opportunity to work with Verdiem and to be able to offer our customers a practical way to make tangible progress in their efforts to reduce the cost of desktop computing, while having a positive impact on the environment,” says Andrew Stewart, Vice President, Corporate Services and Marketing at Compugen. “We’re already rolling out this solution internally as part of our own environmental program.”

Verdiem Shipping on HP Desktop PCs
Verdiem has already established strong ties with industry leaders Microsoft and HP. For example, the new HP Compaq dc7800 and dc5800 small form factor PCs ship with the Verdiem software client already installed.

“Continuing our leadership in green computing is critical to our success, and HP Business PCs are designed specifically with the environment in mind,” says Michael Hughes, Director, Commercial Solutions, Personal Systems Group, HP Canada. “The Verdiem SURVEYOR agent helps our customers to be more environmentally conscious, while saving money at the same time – it’s a win-win for the customer and the environment.”

Verdiem products, which all run on the Microsoft platform, are especially effective in conjunction with Windows Vista’s enhanced power management capabilities. As a result, Verdiem is working closely with Microsoft to help lower desktop TCO and provide further incentives for organizations to migrate to Vista.

“Microsoft and HP are important partners for Verdiem, so when we looked to expand our business beyond the US, we asked both companies who we should work with in Canada, and both recommended Compugen,” says Kevin Klustner, CEO of Verdiem. “This new relationship with Compugen allows us to extend our channel capabilities into the Canadian market to reach new customers.”

BC Hydro Offers Rebates to Verdiem Customers
A growing number of utility companies throughout North America are offering rebates to people and businesses that buy sanctioned products that help to reduce power consumption. Verdiem products have been accepted into the rebate programs of 80 such companies, including BC Hydro’s Power Smart Product Incentive Program. BC Hydro offers a one-time rebate of three dollars for every PC that is licensed with Verdiem software.

Green IT Forum: You, Me and Green IT
Verdiem will join Compugen and HP at the upcoming IDC Canadian Green IT Forum “You, Me and Green IT” being held April 9-10 in Toronto. The forum is designed to help IT and business executives answer key questions about how to effectively decrease IT’s carbon footprint. The Green IT Forum features end-user case studies that provide attendees with practical information about how to implement green IT. Conference attendees will gain a greater understanding of the tools and processes being used to manage, control and optimize the impact of IT on the environment, while having a positive impact on the bottom line.
